Name: Drift Eliminator
Description: A drift eliminator is installed above the fill area in a cooling tower to remove water droplets from the exhaust air stream. Its main job is to change the airflow direction so that heavier droplets fall back into the tower instead of escaping into the atmosphere. In practical operation, a good drift eliminator can significantly reduce water consumption and protect nearby equipment from moisture damage. It also helps meet environmental and water-saving requirements in industrial cooling systems.
A drift eliminator is installed at the air outlet section of a cooling tower and is mainly used to capture fine water droplets before they escape with the exhaust air. Many engineers consider it a key part for water saving and environmental control, especially in regions where water resources are valuable.
The eliminator changes the airflow path into a series of sharp turns. Air can easily follow these turns, but water droplets cannot. As a result, droplets hit the blade surfaces, combine into larger drops, and then fall back into the cooling tower basin under gravity.
By reducing drift loss, the system requires less makeup water. Over long-term operation, this brings clear cost savings, especially for large industrial cooling towers.
When drift is reduced, fewer chemicals are carried out of the system. This helps keep the circulating water chemistry more stable and reduces the frequency of chemical dosing.
PVC is commonly used for standard cooling tower drift eliminators because it is lightweight and cost-effective. PP and CPVC are selected when higher operating temperatures or stronger chemical resistance is required. In coastal or high-humidity environments, material with good aging resistance is preferred.
The most common type is the chevron blade design. It can be manufactured as single-pass or multi-pass structures. Single-pass types provide lower pressure drop, while multi-pass types achieve higher droplet removal efficiency. The final choice depends on fan capacity and allowable resistance.
When selecting a drift eliminator, engineers should consider airflow rate, tower height, and water loading. An oversized eliminator may increase fan power consumption, while an undersized one may cause visible drift. Matching the eliminator design with the cooling tower parameters is the most reliable approach.
Good drift eliminators are designed to keep pressure drop as low as possible while still achieving high drift removal efficiency. This balance ensures that the fan does not consume unnecessary energy while water loss remains under control.
During installation, all modules should be tightly assembled to avoid air bypass. The airflow direction must be respected. For maintenance, regular inspection is recommended to check for broken blades, scaling, or biological fouling. Cleaning with low-pressure water during shutdown can effectively restore performance.
